The IPL is on the back of the One Day World Cup win. Australian opener David Warner thinks so. Australia won the One Day World Cup last year by defeating India. David Warner credited the IPL for that win.
India reached the final after winning 10 consecutive matches in the World Cup. But Rohit Sharma lost in the final against Australia. Warner did not score many runs in that match. But the other opener, Travis Head, scored 137 off 120 balls. Australia won easily, chasing 241 runs.
Talking about that win, Warner said, “We have played in the IPL. I know how the Indian pitch is. The weather, the conditions, the pitch—everything is familiar to us. We knew how the pitch would be if it was red clay and how it would be if it were black clay. That helped us.”
Warner retired from Test and ODI cricket. He will play in the in the T20 World Cup this year. The One Day World Cup final was held in Ahmedabad. Warner thinks that also went in favor of Australia. He said, “We had nothing to lose. Since 2009, we have started to know the Indian fields well. Ahmedabad is a place where boundaries are like Australia. We planned with Melbourne grounds in mind. We were forcing India to hit the far boundary while bowling. I was speaking at chest height. I was looking for gaps while batting with Melbourne in mind. That’s why I could easily take two runs.”
According to him, the Australian cricketers were successful in implementing the plan. “Our team is very experienced,” Warner said. I was able to play the way I thought I would play. Because we understood the wicket.”
