Bayer Leverkusen, the Bundesliga champions, became the first team this Saturday to complete a German league season without losing. With goals from Nigerians Victor Boniface and Robert Andrich, they beat Augsburg 2-1 on the last day of the tournament. It was his 28th victory in 34 days. With twenty minutes remaining, Exequiel Palacios took over.
In addition to being the first team in the five major European leagues to conclude an undefeated season since they did so in April, Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich’s 11-game winning streak. 2011–2012 saw Juventus compete in the Italian Serie A. The Germans have a plus: they did not lose any duels, counting all the competitions, so their streak remains at 51 games, with two finals ahead to finish the season.
This Saturday, they had a clear advantage over Augsburg, but Mert Komur brought the visitors closer, just over half an hour before the final whistle. That led Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso to send Florian Wirtz and Granit Germany against Kaiserlautern of the second division on May 25.
Their classic rival, Cologne, was relegated. And Janik Haberer’s goal in added time for Unión Berlin was vital in confirming their permanence in the category with the 2-1 victory against Freiburg. Because of that victory, Bochum fell into the playoff zone after losing 4-1 to Werder Bremen. Mainz will remain in first place after their 3-1 victory against Wolfsburg.
With a 4-0 victory against Borussia Monchengladbach, Stuttgart finished second, ahead of Bayern Munich, who lost 4-2 to Hoffenheim in Thomas Tuchel’s last game at the helm of the Bavarian multi-champions.
Bayer Leverkusen this season is close to perfection. Although that undefeated record was in danger on several occasions recently, he always had the fortitude and desire to continue maintaining it. In addition to their successes in the Bundesliga, Leverkusen had a very difficult time going undefeated across the board.
They were in danger of losing their perfect record in six games over the past two months, four of which were in the Europa League.
