PSG lost the first leg 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund. In Paris today, the second leg of the Champions League semi-final could not repay the goal, instead falling behind by another goal, 0-1. Finally, the Paris club lost. After 11 years, Dortmund made it to the Champions League final again after winning 2-0 in two legs.
In the final of the 2012–13 season, Dortmund lost 2–1 to home club Bayern Munich. That final was at the famous Wembley Stadium in London.
This time, the final will be held at Wembley on June 1. Two German clubs can be in the final this time too. The opponent in the other semi-final is Bayern Munich-Real Madrid. Munich and Real drew 2-2 in the first leg of the match. If Bayern beat Real at the Bernabeu on Wednesday, there will be a repeat of the 2012–13 final.
German striker Niclas Fullkrug was the hero of Dortmund‘s win at Signal Iduna Park last week. Center-back Mats Hummels gave Dortmund another win at the Parc des Princes today. He scored the only goal of the match in the 50th minute. Another center back, Nico Schlotterbeck, also played well.
However, PSG did not get a chance to score in the match. But luck was probably not on Luis Enrique’s side today. PSG’s shots hit the post and crossbar a total of four times in the two halves.
Kylian Mbappe, who was PSG’s biggest hope, also failed to score. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel had little difficulty stopping his shot from close range in the 81st minute. In the 87th minute, another shot hit Kobel’s hand and hit the crossbar. Apart from this, the Dortmund defenders did not let Mbappe feel very dangerous for the rest of the time.
The French forward is leaving PSG at the end of this season. This will be his last match in European competition for his hometown club. Mbappe’s European chapter for PSG ended in disappointment.
The Champions League has become a dream for PSG. A record 12-time champions of Ligue 1 were eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals for the third time and lost in the final once (in the 2019–20 season).
PSG’s disappointing night in Paris was an occasion of great joy for Dortmund. Hummels celebrated with the few Dortmund fans who had become guests at the Parc des Princes after the match. Especially for Dortmund coach Edin Terzic, this is a very emotional moment. It’s a dream come true to have spent 11 years coaching the team he grew up supporting and leading them to the Champions League final.
