France’s handsome Roger Amilhastre is now 90 years old. Roger wakes up very early every morning. Roger comes to the shop, and he works. He said, “I love my job very much. It’s embedded in my bone marrow. Even though I am so old, my hands do not shake so much while cutting hair.
Roger said these things in an interview given to AFP recently while sitting in his shop in the small town of Saint-Girons at the foot of the Pyrenees.
Now Roger is suffering from arthritis. Still, he worked from Tuesday to Saturday. Customers’ hair and beards are cut with care.
Roger said, ‘The intention was to retire at the age of 60. But my wife was ill. Roger’s wife died last January. So he continues to work to forget the sorrow.
France’s National Union of Hairdressers reckons Roger is the country’s oldest working beautician. Christophe Dore, president of the union, said, “There are very few people among us who work at such a young age. Working at the age of 90 is really exceptional.’
Christophe Dore also said, “I’m not sure if he is the oldest handsome man in France.” And if he is not, then he will not be much smaller than the previous one.’
According to France’s national statistics institute, INSEE, nearly five million people over the age of 65 are still working in France.
Many of Roger’s customers call him Achille. His father established this shop in his own name in 1932. Then teach his son to do the same. This store was a witness to the time when Germany occupied France during World War II.
67-year-old Jean-Louis Surre is one of Roger’s oldest customers. He regularly gets his hair cut here. He now comes here to tell stories and read news. Also in the shop was 84-year-old Jean Laffitte.
