Vice President of the United States Kamala Harris was confirmed on Monday night, August 5, 2024, as the Democratic Party’s candidate in the race for the country’s presidency. She will face former President Donald Trump (Republican Party) in the November 5 election.

Since President Joe Biden (Democratic Party) dropped out of the race for re-election on July 21, Kamala’s support has grown exponentially. In July, the vice president received $310 million in donations, with over $200 million coming in the first week following Biden’s withdrawal from the race.

Kamala also quickly secured the initial support of 2,668 Democratic delegates to be nominated, according to a tally by the Associated Press. The minimum needed is 1,976 votes.

Her nomination became official after five days of online voting by delegates, held from Thursday (August 1) to Monday (August 5). Shortly before midnight, the party announced that 99% of participating delegates chose Kamala, the percentage corresponding to 3,923 delegates in favor of the candidacy.

“We believe in the promise of America, and that’s what this campaign is all about,” Kamala said in a brief call shortly after securing the nomination. “We’re on it; we’re on the road, and it’s not going to be easy, but we’re going to get it done.”

Kamala will be officially announced as a candidate during the Democratic National Convention, from August 19 to 22, in Chicago. The “acceptance speech” usually takes place on the last day of the convention.

Who is Kamala Harris

The Democratic presidential candidate for the White House has made a number of firsts in her career. Kamala was the first woman to serve as San Francisco’s district attorney, the first attorney general of California of Asian descent (her mother is Indian), the first Indian-American senator in the United States, and the first black woman to become vice president of the country.

With her candidacy confirmed, Kamala became the first black woman to be nominated by a major party to run for the White House. If she defeats Trump in the election, she will be the first woman to serve as President of the United States.
