Dominican Republic player Juan Soto has signed a contract with the New York Mets, setting a new record in Major League Baseball (MLB). The deal is worth $765 million for 15 years. USA Today reported the information on Monday (December 9, 2024).
If the Mets’ value does not reach $4.9 billion by 2029, Soto has the option to leave the team, based on the deal. In addition, he will receive a $450 million signing bonus, subject to approval by the MLB commissioners.
Soto began his professional career with the Washington Nationals in 2018, quickly rising to prominence and contributing to their World Series victory in 2019. After playing for the San Diego Padres, he spent the 2023 season with the New York Yankees.
Despite interest from teams like the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers, Soto was selected by the New York Mets.
The Mets’ offer, in addition to being financially attractive, suggests a commitment from the team to forming a competitive roster to win titles.
