Humza Yousaf, Scotland’s first Muslim First Minister, has resigned. He resigned after a year of assuming office. Hamza Yousef announced his resignation in a press conference on Monday.
Humza Yousaf was elected to the Scottish Parliament for the first time in 2011 on a Scottish National Party (SNP) ticket. A year later, he was made Minister of Europe and International Development. He served in this position for four years.
After that, Humza Yusaf continued to get promotions. In 2016, he took on the responsibility of transport minister. Two years later, he became the Minister of Justice and, in 2021, the Minister of Health.
In 2023, the then-First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, announced her decision to step down. Yusuf was then considered as his successor.
The first prime minister from an ethnic minority was chosen, Humza Yousaf. Aside from that, this Scottish national with Pakistani ancestry became the first Muslim leader of a significant political party in the UK.
