Heat-related advisories were issued in eight states on Tuesday, as the National Weather Service (NWS) continued to warn of โsevere heat conditionsโ in parts of the United States, Newsweek reported.
Why It Matters
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), extreme heat can cause heat-related illnesses, especially in older adults, young children, and people with chronic health problems.
The CDC says warning signs include muscle tension, heavy sweating, dizziness, and nausea. According to the agency, more than 700 people in the United States die from extreme heat each year.
Extreme heat warnings issued by the NWS were in effect for southwestern Arizona and neighboring areas of southeastern California.
According to the NWS, afternoon temperatures could reach 115 degrees Fahrenheit (about 46.1ยฐC), creating a major heat risk in these areas, which emphasizes that heat-related illnesses increase significantly during periods of extreme heat.
Meanwhile, heat advisories issued by the NWS for eastern and central Washington, northern Utah, northern Oregon, and parts of Idaho have not reached the final warning level.
According to the weather agency, high-temperature warnings have been issued for northern and northeastern Nevada, as well as southeastern Montana.
On Tuesday, these states were expected to experience hot conditions with temperatures near or exceeding the triple-digit mark (meaning near or above 100 degrees Fahrenheit).
In these hot conditions, the NWS recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors in air-conditioned rooms, avoiding sun exposure, and checking in with relatives and neighbors.
Newsweek reported that the United States has been gripped by a severe heat wave over the past week, breaking temperature records in several states. According to AccuWeather, Philadelphia reached 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.33ยฐC) on Tuesday, breaking a record that had been in place for more than 100 years and marking the first 100-degree reading since July 2012. Meanwhile, Northern New York also matched a historic record, with Plattsburgh reaching 101 degrees Fahrenheit (38.33ยฐC) a day earlier.
On June 30, the NWS forecast office in Phoenix, Arizona, said on social media platform X that a record high temperature of 116ยฐF (46.667ยฐC) was recorded at Sky Harbor on Monday, surpassing previous records set in 1979 and 2013.
