Last Sunday, November 17, 2024, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Stรธre declared that Norway would give US$60 million to the Amazon Fund in recognition of Brazil’s 2023 31% deforestation reduction. The two countries have a long-standing partnership related to climate issues and the preservation of the tropical forest.
โBrazilโs success in reducing deforestation is clear proof of the ambitions and determination of the Lula government. It shows how targeted measures can produce important results for the climate and nature,โ said the prime minister in Rio de Janeiro. In 2023, deforestation in the Amazon in Brazil reached its lowest level since 2015, according to the source.
โIt is crucial for the global climate and nature that Brazil achieves its deforestation control goals. Through our support for the Amazon Fund,” Stรธre said.
The Amazon Fund was established 16 years ago with the intention of preventing biome deforestation and gathering global donations to protect the Brazilian Amazon.
“The world’s tropical forests absorb and store billions of tons of CO2. Investing in rainforest preservation is one of the most important investments we make. Since Lula resumed office last January, deforestation has decreased dramatically, showing that Brazil is a global leader and a driving force in protecting tropical forests,” the Prime Minister Stรธre added.
The donation was announced during the Global Citizen Now Conference, held at the Getรบlio Vargas Foundation. And US President Joe Biden also announced a donation of US$50 million to the Amazon Fund, during the Democrat’s visit to Manaus.
