A fleet of three Russian naval vessels, including two missile-armed warships, was spotted near the territory of US ally Japan on Monday (February 3) during a deployment in the Asia-Pacific region. Newsweek reported.

Japan, which has signed a security agreement with the United States, and Russia have a territorial dispute over the northern region, which consists of four islands known as the South Kuril Islands and is governed by Moscow after being seized at the end of World War II.

It is worth noting that last Thursday, the Russian military sent four nuclear-capable bombers into international airspace in waters north and west of Japan, and then the Russian naval movement began.

Russia’s Pacific Fleet announced on Monday (February 3) that two corvettes, Rezky (Gnevny-class destroyer) and Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov (Steregushchiy-class corvette), and a fleet oiler, Pechenga, have departed from their Far Eastern naval base in the city of Vladivostok for a long voyage.

In addition, Japan’s defense ministry said three Russian naval vessels had sailed near the country’s 12-nautical-mile-wide territorial waters as they transited the Sea of Japan.

During southward transit, the Russian ships sailed through Japan’s Tsushima Strait, which separates the Korean peninsula to the west and the Japanese archipelago to the east, and designates its eastern and western channels mainly as the Japan International Strait.

According to Newsweek, photos provided by Japan’s Ministry of Defense indicated that two of the Russian vessels were corvettes sent from Vladivostok, based on their hull numbers, while the remaining vessel was identified as a Japanese military supply ship, with no hull number.

Meanwhile, Japan’s defense ministry said it had deployed a ship and an aircraft to monitor Russian vessels and that Russian corvettes were equipped with air defense and anti-ship missiles.

What Russian Pacific Fleet Saying

The Russian Pacific Fleet said in a news release that as part of the upcoming combat training event, the corvettes Rezky and Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov will conduct one-on-one exercises in the Asia-Pacific region.

“In the event of searching for and destroying submarines of a simulated enemy and providing air defense at sea,” the Russian Pacific Fleet added.
