Toni Kroos has announced his return to the German national team after three years of retirement. The 34-year-old midfielder said Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has asked him to return to the team.
Euro Championship, the highest event of European football, will be held in Germany next June-July. With this tournament ahead, Kroos is going to return to Germany’s friendly match team next month.
Kroos said goodbye to Germany after Euro 2021. Germany were eliminated from the last sixteen after losing to England in that tournament. Kroos, the 2014 World Cup winner, did not play in the 2022 World Cup due to his retirement. There was no indication that he could return to the national team. Rather, doubts arose about his playing career as he was not playing well in the last season for Real Madrid in club football.
However, Kroos has found a rhythm for Real this season. At 34, the newly rejuvenated Kroos is needed in Germany’s national team, Nagelsmann said. While announcing his return to Instagram today, Kruse said, ‘I will play for Germany again in March. Why? Because the coach asked me to play. I am also in the mood to play. I am sure that we can play better than we thought in the European Championship.
Germany will play against Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in the ‘A’ group in the World Cup held at home. Before that, the four-time world champions will play against France and the Netherlands during the international break in March.
Kroos scored 17 goals in 106 matches for Germany from 2010 to 2021. Having been eliminated from the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, Germany have been going through a rough patch in recent times. Hansi Flick was replaced by Naglesman last September. Germany have won just one of their first four matches under the former Bayern coach. Naglesman is now focused on strengthening the team with a view to the Euros. One of the steps is the addition of the cross.
