A Russian drone strike in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv early Wednesday (Jan 1, 2024) killed one person and injured at least six others and damaged buildings in two districts, city officials said. Reuters reported.
Explosions ripped through the morning sky as Ukraine’s air force warned of drones approaching the capital, and the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, said in the incident that air defense systems were repelling enemy Russian attacks.
Mayor Klitschko also said the drone strike partially destroyed two floors of the residential building, and drone debris also damaged another nearby building. The building in the affected neighborhood was non-residential.
However, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister, Yulia Svyrydenko, expressed outrage at Russia’s aggression at the start of the new year.
According to Reuters, Kiev’s military said it shot down 63 of Russia’s 111 drones overnight in various regions of Ukraine and downed another 46 due to electronic jamming.
As Politico reported on 8 December 2024, Ukraine has lost 43,000 troops and another 370,000 wounded since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
