PM Justin Trudeau, who has been Prime Minister of Canada since 4 November 2015, resigned on Monday (6 Jan 2025) as Canada PM and Liberal Party leader amid intense pressure and significant cabinet changes. AP reported.
Tesla and social media platform X owner Elon Musk and US President-elect Donald Trump responded to Trudeau’s resignation announcement.
Outside the official residence, Trudeau said, “This morning I (13 Jan) advised the Governor General that we need a new session. The Governor General has granted this request, and the House will now adjourn until March 24. And any success in my career that I have personally achieved is due to public support and their encouragement.”
Trudeau added, “So last night at dinner I told my kids about my resignation. Today I’m sharing with you that I want to resign as party leader, as prime minister.”
Elon Musk reaction
Billionaire Musk responded to Trudeau’s resignation announcement on X, as he reshared an X user’s post that highlighted major events of the year.
Donald Trump reaction
US President-elect Trump posted a message on his social media platform, Truth Social, after Trudeau announced his resignation. In the message, Trump wrote, “Many people in Canada love to be the 51st state. The US can no longer afford the huge trade deficits and subsidies that Canada needs to keep afloat. Justin Trudeau knew it and resigned.”
According to AP, he was criticized by people in the country for balancing economic growth and environmental protection. He imposed a tax on carbon emissions, and his government provided massive financial aid during the COVID-19 pandemic. But hostility has grown among opponents of Trudeau’s vaccine mandate.
Trump also asked Trudeau to emphasize stopping the flow of immigrants and drugs into the United States. Trump also threatened to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods. And Trudeau’s various actions are believed to be the main reason for his resignation as he faced pressure from the people of the country.
