China’s drone industry registered almost 608 thousand vants (unmanned aerial vehicles) in the first half of 2024, an increase of 48% compared to the number registered at the end of 2023. In a Wednesday, July 10, 2024, interview with journalists, Zhiyong Song, the head of China’s State Administration of Civil Aviation, made the announcement.
The accumulated flight time of UAVs reached almost 9.82 million hours in the first half of the year, 134 thousand more than in the same period last year. “The data indicates that China’s low-lying economy is entering a stage of rapid development,” Zhiyong said.
The head of administration stated that he will further optimize technical standards in the UAV sector and guide local authorities in improving the planning and construction of infrastructure for the use of the vehicles.

According to him, efforts will also be made to improve the communication, navigation, and surveillance capabilities of low-altitude UAVs and establish safety operation rules and regulatory policies for different flight activities.
China’s low-lying economy, propelled by technological advancements, is expanding rapidly. According to a report released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in the country, the value of this sector reached 505.95 billion yuan (US$70.92 billion) in 2023, and by 2026, it is predicted to surpass 1 trillion yuan.
