Technology firm OpenAI has been sued by major Canadian media organizations. The amount claimed as compensation in this case may exceed several billion dollars. The complaint against OpenAI is that the company used articles from the media to train its artificial intelligence software, ChatGPT. Information from the Guardian.
The Canadian Ontario Court of Justice demanded compensation for the attack on Friday. A portion of the profits have been claimed from OpenAI using articles from various news organizations. And the use of news articles has been banned.
In this regard, Paul Deegan, president of News Media Canada, said, “These artificial intelligence companies cannibalize proprietary content and are free-riding on the backs of news publishers who invest real money to employ real journalists who produce real stories for real people.”
The plaintiffs include the Globe and Mail, Canadian Press, CBC, Toronto Star, Metroland Media, and Postmedia. OpenAI has been asked for compensation of C$20,000 (Canadian dollars) per article. If they win this case, they will get several billions in compensation.
