Two co-founders of OpenAl, the company that created ChatGPT, announced on Monday night (August 5, 2024) that they are leaving the company’s operations.

John Schulman, who was one of the architects who designed the chatbot, posted that he will be leaving OpenAl and joining Anthropic, a rival company that also develops AI (artificial intelligence). Current CEO Gregory Brockman said he will return only at the end of the year.

“I have made the difficult decision to leave OpenAl. This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment and begin a new chapter in my career where I can return to hands-on technical work. I have chosen to pursue this goal at Anthropic, where I believe I can gain new perspectives and conduct research alongside people who are deeply engaged in the topics I am most interested in,” said John Schulman in a post on his X profile (formerly Twitter).

OpenAI President Gregory Brockman also went to X to announce his temporary departure. “I’m taking a 1-year sabbatical until the end of the year. I’ve never relaxed like this since I co-founded OpenAl 9 years ago. The mission is far from complete; we still have an AGI [artificial general intelligence] safe to build,” he said.

Some of the company’s co-founders and initial developers left over the years after it was created in 2015. Co-founder Elon Musk left the company after 3 years and is currently suing OpenAl. The billionaire claims that the developer has strayed from its original purpose related to AI.

Others include co-founder Ilya Sutskever, who left the company in May, and Andrej Karpathy, who left in February.
