Russia has continued to use drones to strike positions in Ukraine, despite the Kremlin announcing a temporary ceasefire on Saturday to mark Orthodox Easter, the Associated Press (AP) reported, citing a Ukrainian military official.
Serhii Kolesnychenko, the communications officer for the 148th Independent Artillery Brigade, informed the AP that the Russian side is not observing the ceasefire.
Kolesnychenko said that Russian forces continued to use drones to attack Ukrainian positions in the sector they were operating in, at the junction of the Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhzhia regions.
The military official also said that Ukrainian forces were responding with “silence to silence and fire to fire.”
President Vladimir Putin declared a ceasefire on Thursday (April 9) to mark the Orthodox Easter weekend and ordered his forces to cease fighting from 4pm on Saturday until late Sunday night.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pledged to abide by a 32-hour ceasefire on Saturday but warned that any violations would be met with swift military action.
Although Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov on Friday described President Putin’s Easter ceasefire move as a “humanitarian” initiative, he said Russia was focused on a comprehensive settlement based on its long-standing demands, which is a major obstacle preventing the two sides from reaching an agreement.
