Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced that his country has no plans to launch nuclear weapons into space. He claimed that his country is just increasing its capabilities in space like the United States.
President Putin made this statement on Tuesday. Earlier last week, the White House claimed that Russia had acquired an “alarming” capability to develop anti-satellite weapons. However, such a weapon has not yet been deployed.
More than 130 countries around the world, including Russia, have signed the treaty, which bans the deployment of “nuclear or any weapons of mass destruction” in orbit or any other means of deploying weapons outside space.More than 130 countries around the world, including Russia, have signed the treaty, which bans the deployment of “nuclear or any weapons of mass destruction” in orbit or any other means of deploying weapons outside space.
White House National Security Adviser John Kirby said Russia’s actions would violate the Outer Space Treaty. However, he did not comment on whether this weapon is nuclear capable or not.
More than 130 countries including Russia have signed this agreement. The treaty prohibits the deployment of “nuclear or any weapons of mass destruction” in orbit or any other means of deploying weapons outside outer space.
The White House said it intends to directly engage Russian authorities with its concerns.
“Our position is absolutely clear and transparent,” Putin said. We have always and clearly opposed the deployment of nuclear weapons in space. On the other hand, we call on everyone to comply with all existing agreements in this regard.
Russian President Putin termed the US accusation as part of the “whispering of the West”.
Putin said, “Russia has repeatedly hinted at strengthening joint cooperation in space.” But for some reason in the West, the matter did not come forward.

In a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, President Putin noted, “Like the United States and other countries, Russia has only developed its space capabilities.” They (Western countries) know it.’
In this regard, Sergei Shoigu said, “We have not deployed any nuclear weapon or any of its materials in space, which could create a field of satellite destruction or satellite malfunction.”
Shoigu alleged that the White House may have complained about Russia’s new space capabilities to pressure Congress into supporting U.S. aid to Ukraine. Also, Russia’s withdrawal from nuclear arms control talks amid tensions with the United States over Ukraine could bring Moscow back into it.
Putin did not rule out the possibility of future negotiations with the United States. But he stressed his view that Washington’s pressure over Russia’s defeat in Ukraine made that possibility impossible at the moment.
