Popular British rock band Coldplay has partnered with India’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani’s, broadcasting venture to livestream one of its two upcoming concerts in Ahmedabad, India. So international artists have stepped up their efforts to reach Indian fans, Reuters reported.
Thousands of people will attend the Coldplay concert at the Narendra Modi Stadium in the Indian state of Gujarat on January 26. Tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale last year, leaving many spectators without tickets, indicating Coldplay’s popularity.
Ambani’s Reliance Industries and Walt Disney merged their Indian media assets in November 2024 in an $8.5 billion deal. Coldplay’s announcement is one of the first major partnerships since the deal, Reuters reported, creating the country’s largest entertainment company.
The concert will be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar, the biggest popular streaming app among Indian users.
India’s events market is undergoing a major transformation, with a growing appetite for entertainment from a large number of young, diverse Indians and attracting popular global music stars such as Dua Lipa, Ed Sheeran, and Maroon 5. Foreign music stars performed at Ambani’s son’s wedding last year, including Rihanna, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, and Luis Fonsi.
Streaming apps are used by millions of people to watch content, including Hollywood and Bollywood movies, the reality show Bigg Boss, and sports, especially the T20 cricket format Indian Premier League and other cricket tournaments.
According to Reuters, Coldplay will play three concerts in Mumbai starting Saturday, before traveling to Ahmedabad for shows on January 25 and January 26. The concerts are part of the acclaimed Music of the Spheres World Tour.
Coldplay’s concert tickets were in such demand last year that they sold out in just minutes, much to the chagrin of many fans on social media.
