According to a national survey by the Government of India, Indore city of Madhya Pradesh is ranked first along with Surat in the list of the two cleanest cities this year. And according to the same survey, the 600-year-old Howrah near Kolkata has been named the most untidy city in the country. The ten names at the very bottom of the list are several cities including Kolkata, that is, these are the dirtiest cities in the country, what are the citizens of that city saying after receiving such a shameful title.

According to citizens, the city is 600 years old, so the system of sewers and roads is very old. Some of the municipalities are doing well, such as the New Town area. But some places like Howrah especially Howrah Maidan or Belelias Road all these places are unusually dirty. Apart from that, the arrangements for all the new places are well maintained and the old places like Barabazar or Howrah are in dirty condition.

There are several canals running through Kolkata and human habitation and open latrines on them and canals. Again in Howrah city, the garbage accumulated has taken the shape of a mountain. The eyes of the local people have dried up after seeing the garbage and open drains on the city streets. However, the piles of paint on the road do not escape the attention of foreign tourists.

According to Japanese tourists, everyone should throw the garbage in a certain place, but if they don’t find the designated place, everyone throws the garbage wherever they see it. Garbage should be kept by oneself if there is no place to play, and if there is a place to keep garbage, it should be thrown there.

These cities are not clean, but piles of garbage accumulate again. Many citizens are blaming themselves.

On the other hand, the city of Surat, which has come up in the list of the two cleanest cities this year, had a plague epidemic in 1994 from the accumulated garbage. Surat became the cleanest city from that situation.

According to Brajesh Suratkar Council, Surat Municipality, Surat was known as dirty gobra in Gujarat and now it is number one. As the administration and cleaning workers have a role in it, citizens also have a contribution. Garbage is collected from the doorstep of every house, plastic and other garbage is separated there. You will not see litter anywhere. By carrying out various awareness campaigns, the citizens have been assured that no one should throw any packet of fruit peels on the street. Everyone now has a dustbin in their car, they put the garbage in the car dustbin and when they come home, they throw it in the house garbage box.

On the other hand, the municipal administration of Howrah city is claiming that no one knew that such a survey had been conducted on cleanliness. However, the website of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Central Government has made it clear that exactly how this survey named Swachta Sarvekshan has been done. And this is not the first time, this survey is going on all over the country for several years and due to the competition between the cities for the survey, many small and anonymous cities are getting clean and making themselves clean.
