The sun released a giant ball of plasma and magnetic field that hit Earth on October 10. The northern lights will be visible much further south than usual due to the strong magnetic storm it produced, as reported by Science Alert.

“It is currently expected to arrive tomorrow morning or noon EST and possibly continue into the next day,” Sean Dahl of the Space Weather Prediction Center said on Oct. 9.

The coronal mass ejection (CME) is rushing at a speed of four million kilometers per hour. According to NOAA forecasts, the magnetic storm that will cover the planet will be in the G4 category. Comparing this to the strongest possible G5, it is marginally weaker.

When CVMs crash into the Earth’s magnetosphere, they can cause magnetic storms. These disturbances, in turn, can affect the operation of satellites, GPS, and radio signals.

According to the Meteoagent Portal, magnetic storms on our planet have not subsided for more than a week. The K-index is more than 8, indicating that the present disruptions are strong. The magnetic storm is expected to remain on Earth until October 12 in the majority of situations.

In addition to impairing elderly and weather-dependent individuals’ well-being, magnetic storms can cause communication disruptions. They might specifically experience joint pain, headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and insomnia.
