This bill, HR 6508, introduced by Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky and co-sponsored by Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida, calls for the withdrawal of the United States from NATO.

Since its founding in 1949, the United States has led the alliance and is its most powerful member.

“NATO is a Cold War relic. The United States should withdraw from NATO and use that money to defend our country, not socialist countries,” Massie said Tuesday in a statement on social media platform X.

Massie has urged Republican lawmakers to reach a decision on the bill. According to Newsweek, the legislation is in its early stages, and there is no indication that the Trump administration will support it. The bill comes amidst a debate over Washington’s future role in NATO, where President Trump has repeatedly pressured European members for not spending enough on defense.

Massie said in a statement that the United States should not be “the world’s security blanket, especially when wealthy countries refuse to pay for their own defense.”

The US president said that NATO’s European members should spend at least 3.5% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense. In response to Trump’s remarks, countries like Germany and Poland have since significantly increased their military spending.
