Wine is one of the most widely consumed alcoholic beverages in the world, made by fermenting grapes, with billions of liters consumed worldwide each year, but it is most popular across North America and Europe.

Last year, the United States ranked first among the top 10 wine-consuming countries, followed by France in second place, Italy in third, Germany in fourth, and the United Kingdom in fifth.

In sixth place is Spain, followed by Russia, Argentina, Portugal, and China. And you will be surprised to know that seven of the top 10 wine-consuming countries worldwide are European countries.

Below are the top 10 wine-consuming countries for 2024, based on data from the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), as published by Visual Capitalist.

China is the 10th largest wine-drinking country and one of the leading in Asia, drinking 550 million liters of wine. However, according to Visual Capitalist, China’s wine consumption fell 19.3% year-over-year in 2024, continuing the country’s downward trend in wine consumption since 2019.
