Russia, a country spanning Eastern Europe and Northern Asia, also ranks first in the list of top European countries with Muslim populations in 2024. And the reason the country has a large Muslim population is because of its vast territory and diverse ethnic groups.
Next are Germany and France, which have the largest Muslim populations in Europe, with the main reason for this population growth being thought to be immigration and the influx of workers.
Islam emerged as the second largest religion, with 50 million followers, which is about 6.81% of the European population.
The Muslim population in the UK is growing every year, with the main sources being populations from South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
London, the top tourist attraction, is home to 15% of the total population of Muslims, according to the 2021 UK census.
Among European countries, Albania, Kosovo, and Bosnia & Herzegovina have the largest Muslim populations as a percentage of the total population; the reasons for this increase are mainly traditional and cultural.
Historically and culturally rich countries such as Spain and Italy have seen an increase in Muslim populations, largely due to immigration. According to Anadolu Agency, the Muslim population in Spain has exceeded 2.5 million and is likely to reach 3 million.
Another European country, the Netherlands, has also seen its Muslim population grow through immigration, the arrival of refugees, and asylum seekers.
