US President-elect Donald Trump said on Saturday, November 30, 2024, he discussed the border, trade, and energy issues in a “very productive” meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The meeting took place amid fears of a trade war, reports Reuters.
On the evening of Friday, November 29, Trudeau made an unannounced visit to Florida and had dinner with Trump at the Mar-a-Lago residence.
“We discussed many important topics that require the joint work of both countries,” Trump said. And in a post on the social network X, Trudeau said that he was looking forward to working together.
A Canadian government representative on terms told Reuters on condition of anonymity that it was a positive meeting that lasted three hours. Trudeau has said he is serious about possible tariffs.
“Donald Trump, when he makes these statements, he plans to follow through,” said the Canadian prime minister Trudeau.
Days earlier, the US president-elect promised to impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada. Concerns of a trade war were sparked by the pledge. President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico issued a warning, stating that Trump’s tariffs might have “terrible consequences” for both nations. Scheinbaum leaves open the possibility of reprisals.
Trump intends to use the tariffs as a means of convincing Canada and Mexico to assist in halting cross-border illegal migration and drug trafficking.
Many economists, however, warn that possible high import tariffs will increase costs for American consumers. In response, Trump claims that imposing tariffs on trading partners helps protect American producers and promote job growth in the country.
