Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift announced their engagement in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday afternoon, August 26, which quickly went viral on social media. Travis’ father, Ed Kelce, later revealed new details about his son’s engagement to Swift, including where it took place and how long the two have been engaged.
The engagement of two powerful figures from the worlds of music and professional sports attracted intense public and media attention, as the pair had a huge active following.
What To Know
Travis’ father, Ed Kelce, 74, told local media outlet News 5 Cleveland that the engagement happened at a garden in Lee’s Summit, Missouri.
“He got her out there, they were about to go out to dinner, and he said, ‘let’s go out and have a glass of wine,’ … they got out there, and that’s when he asked her, and it was beautiful,” Ed Kelce told the outlet.
Travis, 35, an NFL star player for the Kansas City Chiefs, and pop star Swift had been dating publicly for years, with the other making appearances at games and concerts.
According to Ed, his son Travis proposed to Swift, 32, about two weeks ago, more than two years after they became one of the most influential celebrity couples.
“Travis actually did the proposal, oh, maybe two weeks, not quite two weeks ago,” Ed Kelce added. “He was going to put it off till this week. I think she was getting maybe a little antsy, but he was going to put her off till this week to, you know, make some grand thing, to make it a big special event.”
Travis’ father added, “I told him repeatedly, you know, you could do it on the side of the road, do it any place that makes it a special event … when you get down on one knee and ask her to marry you.”
Ed revealed that he was at a public practice for the Philadelphia Eagles (NFL team) on Sunday when he got a call from his son and Swift.

“So, at that practice… I got a FaceTime call from them, and as soon as I saw the FaceTime, I saw it was Travis, and then I saw Taylor there with him, I knew what they were going to say, and they, you know, let us know,” Travis’ father said.
Trump’s response
Responding to a reporter’s question on Tuesday, President Donald Trump congratulated Travis and Swift on their engagement, saying, “Well, I wish them a lot of luck. I think he’s a great player, he’s a great guy. I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”
