In the early hours of Sunday, November 24, 2024, a gunman in Amman, the capital of Jordan, died after opening fire and wounding three police officers in the area surrounding the Israeli embassy. The nationality of the shooter was not released, and an investigation into the episode is ongoing.
Jordanian government spokesman Mohamed Momani called the incident a “terrorist attack against the forces” and said the gunman was an “outlaw with a criminal history.”
As reported by state news agency Petra, the Public Security Directorate said that “a person opened fire on a patrol operating in the Rabieh area of the capital.” When security personnel allegedly opened fire on the man, they retaliated “in accordance with the rules of engagement, resulting in the death of the attacker.”
The current government’s efforts, according to Momani, are to “clarify all the details and connections and comply with the corresponding legal and security requirements.” He added that “anyone who tampers with the nation’s security and attacks on security personnel will be met with a firm response.”
