Actress Aubrey Plaza and Baena separated months before the death of American screenwriter and film director Jeff Baena, according to the medical examiner’s report.
Plaza and Baena separated in September 2024, and a month later, Baena made alarming comments to Plaza, prompting her to call a friend and ask her to check on her husband’s health, according to a Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner report obtained by PEOPLE.
In October 2024, after a health check-up with a doctor, Beena went to therapy. According to the documents, he was “recently experiencing marital problems” with Plaza. Baena, 47, committed suicide on Friday, January 3.

According to PEOPLE, Plaza, 40, last received a text message from screenwriter and film director Baena on the day of his death, at 10:36 am (ET). Reports state that Baena’s body was first discovered by her dog walker.
Following the news of Baena’s death, Plaza and her late husband’s family called her death an “unimaginable tragedy.”
In a statement to PEOPLE, Plaza said he was deeply grateful for everyone’s help and pledged to respect everyone’s privacy during this time.
Baena has many directorial and film-related contributions to his name. Notably, he began his directorial career with a zombie comedy called Life After Beth, starring Plaza. He then led an anthology drama series called Cinema Toast in 2021, which aired on Showtime and was Plaza’s directorial debut, with a total of 10 episodes.
Baena met and started dating Plaza in 2011, and they married in May 2021, when Plaza referred to Baena as her “dear husband” in an Instagram post.
