Mojtaba Khamenei, the second son of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, has reportedly been chosen as his father’s successor. The decision was made in a secret meeting of the Assembly of Experts. A report by Iran International was cited by Israeli news outlet ynet News.
At the request of the 85-year-old Khamenei, who is reportedly struggling with health issues, a secret meeting was called on September 26. Khamenei and his aides allegedly threatened the 60-member assembly, which was under incredible pressure to make a unanimous decision.
The Iran International report indicates that Khamenei’s decision was not made public in order to prevent criticism. Fearing widespread public protests, the assembly decided to keep the decision as secret as possible, it said, adding that members were warned of severe consequences for any leaks.
