Mexico won their 10th title by defeating the USA 2-1 in the final match of the 18th edition of the CONCACAF Gold Cup held in 2025 on July 7 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
Chris Richards scored in the 4th minute of the first half to give the USA a 1-0 lead, but in the 27th minute, Mexico’s striker Raúl Jiménez equalized and celebrated in a tribute to the recently deceased Portuguese legend Diogo Jota. However, Mexico dominated the first half more than the United States.
Then in the second half, Edson Álvarez scored the winning goal in the 77th minute with a header, giving Mexico a 2–1 lead. However, the United States created chances but was unable to come back into the game. After full time, the referee finally blew the whistle, and Mexico defeated the United States 2-1 to win their tenth CONCACAF Gold Cup title after two years.
Sunday’s match was held at Houston’s NRG Stadium, where 70,925 spectators were in attendance, making the final even more exciting.
As of 2025, the United States has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup a total of 7 times and has been runner-up 7 times. The last time it won the title was in 2021.
What happened to Diogo Jota?
The football world was in mourning when news broke on July 3 that Portugal and Liverpool FC player Diogo Jota and his younger brother André Filipe Teixeira da Silva had died in a car accident. The incident occurred on the A-52 highway in Cernadilla, in the province of Zamora, Spain. At the time of their deaths, Jota was 28 years old, and his brother was 25 years old.
Football legend Jota joined English Premier League club Liverpool FC in 2020, and he played 123 matches for the club and scored 47 goals.
His last match with the national team was the UEFA Nations League final, where Portugal defeated Spain to win the title.
