The hurricane is expected to reach Jamaica on Wednesday, with warnings of deadly winds and flooding. The Executive Secretary of the UN Fund declared that the climate crisis is causing disasters and that “much more ambitious climate action by governments and companies” is needed.
Category 5 Hurricane Beryl, the first recorded in the season and history of Atlantic cyclones, hits the islands of the Antilles with maximum force, leaving at least five dead and widespread destruction in the Caribbean Sea.
Earlier, Beryl, with a force of Category 4 on the five-point scale, had maximum sustained winds of 225 kilometers per hour (kph) at noon. The areas most at risk are St. Vincent, the Grenadines, and Grenada.
