On Wednesday, July 16, at the Stade de Genève stadium in Lancy, Italy defeated Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals of the UEFA European Women’s Championship to reach the semi-finals.
Cristiana Girelli scored the first goal for Italy against Norway in the 50th minute, and she later scored the winning goal in the 90th minute. Ada Hegerberg scored a goal for Norway.
When Girelli scored the winning goal in the 90th minute, the Italian crowd cheered their players with “Forza Italia” chants, and the Stade de Genève was filled with emotion.
For the first time since 1997, the Italian women’s team reached the semi-finals of the 2025 European Championship, which will remain a memorable chapter in football history. Previously, Italy had reached the semi-finals by defeating Spain 2-1.
After the match, Italian midfielder Giada Greggi told Reuters that team unity was the reason Italy reached the semi-finals of the Women’s European Championship, ending a 28-year wait.
“I think the humility, the fact that we are a united group, showing our qualities, that’s what made this important result and we brought it home,” said Greggi, who came off the bench in the 77th minute of Wednesday’s match against Norway.
“There were a lot of emotions in that (second) goal. It was the whole journey we took, the sacrifices we made and in the end we reached the semi-final,” Greggi told Reuters.
