Meta announced this Tuesday (September 17, 2024) that it will create profiles for minors under 18 on Instagram. In addition to giving parents more assurance about the company’s security, the measure attempts to regulate the content and nature of interactions that young people have on social media. Many people believe that Meta’s action is very helpful, given the numerous detrimental effects that Instagram has on today’s young children. As a result, it seems like a wise and helpful decision.
“We know that parents want to make sure their teens can use social media to connect with their friends and explore their interests without worrying about unsafe or inappropriate experiences,” the company says.
The announcement comes a week after the Australian government proposed restricting Instagram for children. According to the Guardian, Meta’s global director of security, Antigone Davis, said the idea of creating specific accounts for minors came from parents’ concerns about their children’s safety.
The main changes would be to restrict who can interact with teenagers’ accounts, as well as measures that allow guardians to control usage time and what can be accessed by teenagers.
