Russian military news: Oleksandr Syrskyi, the head of Ukraine’s army, said on Monday (November 11, 2024) that Russia has intensified its military efforts to retake the western Kursk region on the Ukrainian border. In addition to an ongoing offensive in the country’s east, the goal is to move Ukrainian forces and reclaim lost territory, reported Reuters.
The New York Times reported that 50,000 Russian troops, including North Korean military personnel, had been mobilized for a cross-border attack the day before Moscow launched its incursion to retake Kursk.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) had already confirmed in October the presence of North Korean soldiers in the conflict. Russia, however, has not confirmed this information.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui reaffirmed their bilateral commitment to carry out agreements they had made to provide military support on November 2. They met in the Russian capital, Moscow.
Ukrainian and Russian aggression
In August 2022, Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk marked a significant offensive into Russian territory in response to the Russian invasion 6 months earlier. Russia, in turn, advanced slowly into eastern Ukraine, capturing villages in the Donbass region.
Due to the Kursk invasion near the Russian border, Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to retaliate against Ukraine. Kiev already controlled an area of more than 1,000 sq km in Kursk. About 121,000 people had to be evacuated from the region.
