Scotland beat Denmark 4-2 on Tuesday (November 18) to secure their place in the World Cup for the first time since 1998. But when Scotland scored twice in stoppage time against Denmark that day, the fans were celebrating the victory and jubilation in such a way that it wasn’t just Hampden Park that was shaking.

According to the British Geological Survey (BGS), when Kenny McLean scored from the halfway line to secure a stunning 4-2 victory against Denmark at the end of stoppage time, the outburst of emotion from Scotland’s fans was so intense that it was the equivalent of a very small earthquake.

BGS said that when McLean put the ball in the net, the crowd celebrated so much that seismic activity was recorded by the Glasgow Geothermal Observatory in Dalmarnock, about 2 km from Hampden Park. According to the records, the reading that night was between −1 and 0 on the Richter scale.

BGS also reported that the measured record generated the equivalent of about 200 kilowatts of power, enough to power the batteries of 25 to 40 cars.
