DOHA, Qatar — Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the former Emir of Qatar who transformed the Gulf nation into one of the world’s most influential diplomatic and economic powers, has died at the age of 74.

Qatar’s royal court, the Amiri Diwan, confirmed his death on Sunday. No cause was given. Tributes from world leaders quickly followed, highlighting his role in shaping modern Qatar.

Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani ruled from 1995 to 2013 after taking power in a bloodless coup. During his leadership, Qatar saw rapid economic growth driven by its vast natural gas reserves. His government invested heavily in infrastructure, education, and global business, helping the country achieve one of the highest per-capita incomes in the world.

He also expanded Qatar’s international presence through initiatives such as the launch of Al Jazeera and the growth of Qatar Airways, strengthening the nation’s global influence.

In 2013, he stepped down in his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, marking a rare and orderly transfer of power in the Gulf region.

During his rule, Qatar increased its diplomatic role and secured the right to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first Middle Eastern country to do so. While some of his policies drew criticism, supporters credit him with giving Qatar a strong and independent voice on the world stage.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other global leaders paid tribute, describing Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani as a visionary leader who strengthens international ties.
