The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has officially nominated Olaf Scholz for the post of chancellor. The decision was made by the party’s leading committees. At the same time, the Federal Executive Committee approved this decision unanimously. “With his principled character, he is the right chancellor for Germany,” said the head of the party, Saskia Esken, after the announcement of her candidacy.
It will be recalled that more and more rank-and-file SPD politicians called on the party leadership to abandon the unpopular Scholz and put Boris Pistorius at the head of the electoral list.
However, the SPD leadership is unwavering in its support for the incumbent chancellor, despite concerns about the damage the protracted debate could do to the party’s image. And Pistorius himself withdrew his candidacy altogether in favor of Scholz.
