The US Embassy in Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, has announced that it will be closed on Wednesday (November 20, 2024) following threats of airstrikes in the region. A security alert has been issued by the embassy to all US citizens living in the country.
“The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv has received specific information of a potential significant air attack on November 20. Out of an abundance of caution, the Embassy will be closed, and Embassy employees are being instructed to shelter in place. The U.S. Embassy recommends U.S. citizens be prepared to immediately shelter in the event an air alert is announced,” the embassy in Kyiv said in a statement published on its official website.
It is recommended that people locate shelters ahead of time, keep an eye on local media for information on potential airstrikes, and, in the event of an emergency, follow the instructions of Ukrainian authorities and rescuers.
The warning for an airstrike in Kyiv comes a day after the US president approved the use of military force and Ukraine launched long-range missiles made in the US against Russian territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order last Tuesday, November 19, that increases the use of nuclear weapons by the nation’s military.
Russian President Putin said approval for expanded use of nuclear weapons in war was a “necessary” response to Western “threats” to Russia’s security.
