The Pentagon said it wants to quickly deliver Patriot air defense missiles and other munitions to Ukraine. The supplies will be provided as part of a new military aid package.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said these things yesterday, Friday. He said that, in this case, the United States will spend 6 billion dollars. However, the US will not supply batteries for the Patriot air defense system.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the Patriot was urgently needed to counter the growing threat of Russian airstrikes. He claimed that this missile system was necessary to save lives at the moment.
A source told the BBC that last Wednesday, US President Joe Biden signed a bill for an aid package worth six billion dollars. Through this, it became law. Patriot missiles and ammunition will be supplied as part of this support package.
At a press conference, Austin said the United States had pledged the largest security assistance package ever. Arrangements are underway to send supplies to Ukraine ‘immediately’.
This support includes air defense munitions, anti-drone systems, and ammunition. However, Patriot is not included in this support package.
Austin said, “They (Ukraine) don’t just need the Patriot; they need a variety of systems, including countermeasures.”
Austin also said he was confident of building more missile systems for Kiev soon. He said that discussions are going on with European partners regarding the supply of additional items.
