The United States is ready to expand travel restrictions on China, a senior Trump administration official told Reuters. The new threat comes just days before US President Donald Trump’s visit to Beijing on May 14-15, a key meeting for US-China relations.
According to the official, China is slowing down efforts to repatriate Chinese citizens illegally in the United States, and Washington is ready to increase sanctions on the country if this position does not change.
After Trump took office in early 2025, he ordered the deportation of a large number of illegal or unauthorized immigrants. Not only that, he threatened to impose tariffs and sanctions on countries that would not accept the deportees. Deporting illegals was one of the main pillars of Trump’s presidential campaign.
There are thousands of Chinese citizens who have overstayed their visas in the United States. For years, the United States has requested that China take these citizens back, but Beijing has refused.
After Trump came to power, China said that the Chinese would be brought back home after vetting, but it would take time.
Beijing has scaled back cooperation in the past six months after China accepted about 3,000 deportees from the United States via charter and commercial flights in early 2025, Reuters reported, citing the official.
The official said China was refusing to fully cooperate with the United States on deportations. But he warned that if China did not increase cooperation, Washington would consider increasing the amount of cash deposits required with visa applications, as well as denying more visas and blocking more entry at the border.
