April 2, (UPI) โ The two-time NFL MVP and three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes will have veteran quarterback Carson Wentz as his backup. Wentz has decided to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.
On Monday night, sources revealed the one-year deal to ESPN, NFL Network, and The Athletic.
Last season, Wentz, 31, saw action with the Los Angeles Rams. He completed 17 of 24 passes for 163 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception. With the Washington Commanders in 2022 and the Indianapolis Colts in 2021, the eight-year veteran played two seasons each. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles as the second overall choice in 2016.
Wentz, a 2017 Pro Bowi selection, threw for 22,292 yards on 62.7% of his attempts. 95 career games, 153 touchdowns, and 67 interceptions. As a starter, he is 47-45-1.
Blaine Gabbert, the only backup quarterback to throw a pass for the Chicts last season, is joined by fellow backup quarterbacks Lan Book and Chris Oladokun to future/reserve contracts earlier this off-season. In his two appearances, he completed 18 of 35 passes for 185 yards and three interceptions. From 2020 to 2022, Mahomes’ main backup was Chad Henne.
