Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent Indian multifaceted figure who is protesting to demand the resignation of the Union Education Minister over the leak of exam question papers, began a 17th day of hunger strike on Tuesday as his physical condition deteriorated, Reuters reported. As a result, several opposition leaders have urged Wangchuk to end his hunger strike due to his deteriorating physical condition.
Wangchuk is on a hunger strike at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in solidarity with the founder of India’s youth organisation, the ‘Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)’. He is on a sit-in demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after millions of students were affected by the leak of the NEET exam question paper in May.
Abhijeet Dipke, 30, who founded ‘CJP’ in May after a top judiciary official’s controversial comments on unemployed youth, attracted a lot of youth on Instagram and soon gained 22 million followers within days of its launch.
Wangchuk, 59, was too weak to talk, Reuters reported. The CJP said he had lost 8.5 kg as of Tuesday and his “health continues to deteriorate.”
According to the Indian government’s PLFS data, the unemployment rate among 15-29 year olds in India was around 10% last year, and it rose to 13.6% in urban areas.

Several opposition leaders, including Arvind Kejriwal, Atishi Marlena, and Akhilesh Yadav, have urged Wangchuk to end his fast.
