More than 100,000 fans took to the streets of Oslo on Monday to give their Norway World Cup team a hero’s welcome, Reuters reported. Despite their quarter-final exit, the country’s people widely celebrated and paid tribute to their World Cup heroes.
Norway’s 2026 World Cup journey ended after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in the quarter-finals. However, the journey was historic for the Norwegian people as their team played in the World Cup after 28 years. Not only that, Norway also defeated one of the strongest teams, Brazil, in the Round of 16 and reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their soccer history.
Norway’s World Cup heroes landed with a traditional water cannon salute before starting their homecoming parade in the capital, and when the team first went to meet King Harald, a massive crowd of supporters quickly filled the royal palace grounds, according to Reuters.
The Norwegian team took part in the traditional ‘Viking Row’ celebration for the last time on the palace steps, with thousands of fans gathered below and Crown Prince Haakon leading the way with a drum. However, star player Erling Haaland was not present for the celebration.
Haaland had an excellent performance in this World Cup, scoring seven goals in five matches and leading the team to the quarterfinals.
The players took part in the parade in an open-top bus and were surrounded by a large crowd of fans celebrating.
