Real Madrid’s French forward Kylian Mbappe is facing rape charges in Sweden, Expressen and Aftonbladet reported on Monday. The country’s public prosecutor’s office confirmed an investigation had been opened without naming the striker. The player has denied the allegations on social media and announced legal action against what he called “fake news.”
The case started after Mbappe’s two-day visit to Stockholm, the Swedish capital. The player was spotted in a restaurant and on a boat with pals while he was in the city. The Swedish Public Prosecutor’s Office did not provide any additional information regarding the case, despite the fact that the crime was allegedly committed in a hotel on October 10.
The investigation is in its early stages, according to Expressen. “Reasonably suspicious” and “probably suspicious” are used in the Swedish legal system to categorize suspects. The lowest level, which seldom leads to pre-trial detention, is where Mbappe was placed.
Mbappe’s press office responded to AFP’s inquiry on Monday by stating that they were not aware of any accusations made against the player. On his Twitter profile, the player discussed the case. “Fake news! It’s becoming so predictable, one day before the hearing, as if it were by chance, he wrote.
This Tuesday (15. October 2024), he faces PSG, his former club, in a hearing. The Madrid striker is demanding payment of €55 million in unpaid wages and bonuses since his departure from the team. PSG said they ‘prefer to ignore’ the player’s insinuation.
Mbappe and his representatives also issued a statement in which they described the allegations as “totally false and irresponsible.” “A new slanderous story is starting to spread online after the publication in the Swedish media Aftonbladet. These accusations are completely false and irresponsible. Their dissemination is unacceptable.”
