On Saturday (November 16, 2024), California health officials said they had identified the first US case of the mpox strain that has recently raised global health concerns about its spread, severity, and transmissibility. US Today reported this information.
According to a news release from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the individual had just returned to California from a trip to eastern Africa, where the strain of mpox, known as clade I, has afflicted multiple nations. The public is not at high risk from this first U.S. case, according to state and federal health officials.
The person has now been kept in a separate room. But according to California health officials, they have found no evidence that the mpox clade I strain has spread between people in California and other US states.Health officials have also contacted the person’s relatives and are looking into the matter.
According to the World Health Organization, early symptoms of mpox are fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, low energy, rash, and enlarged lymph nodes. Most people with this infection make a full recovery.
In critical situations, some people become very ill due to pneumonia, bacterial infections from the lesions, blindness, dehydration, or malnourishment from vomiting or diarrhea. And human organs such as the brain, heart, or genitals can also be infected.
