Prabowo Subianto has been elected president of Indonesia after defeating two rivals. On Wednesday, the country’s Election Commission said that this leader secured enough of a of a majority to become president in the first round of voting. But two of Subianto’s rivals said they would go to court to challenge the election results.
Defense Minister Subianto and his Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka were declared the winners in an unofficial vote count shortly after Indonesia’s presidential election last month.  The Election Commission officially announced them as winners yesterday. Rakabuming Gibran Joko Widodo, the outgoing president, has an elder son named Raka.
The chairman of the Election Commission of Indonesia, Hasyim Asari, said yesterday that they have officially won by getting more than 96 million votes. They got 58.6 percent of the total votes, which is enough to ensure a majority in the first round. Asiari also said that this decision will be effective on March 20.
If a candidate does not receive fifty percent of the vote in the first round, Indonesian elections are conducted in two rounds. But Subianto managed to avoid it.
Subianto’s two rivals in the election are former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan and former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranoyo. Anis got more than 24.9 percent, and Ganjar got 16 percent. Both Anis and Ganjar said that they would complain to the Constitutional Court about the irregularities and fraud in the elections.

In addition to the presidential elections, Indonesia also held elections for members of parliament and regional lawmakers last month. More than 164 million people voted in this year’s presidential election. That is, about 80 percent of the voters were present in the election.
Following yesterday’s official results announcement, Subianto, 72, gave a speech to supporters gathered in front of his Jakarta home. He conveyed his appreciation to the Indonesian people and his political party for winning the presidency.
“We are thankful to the great creator that the KPU (Election Commission) has formally announced the results of the election,” stated Prabowo Subianto. We express our gratitude and ecstatic praise to all the people of Indonesia who exercised their right to vote.
Meanwhile, leaders of various countries have congratulated Subianto. In a statement, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed optimism that Germany’s strategic partnership with Subianto-led Indonesia would continue to grow.
A statement from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the country is ready to work with Subianto to increase strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Subianto on Thursday for winning the election.
