A pair of polar bears attacked and killed a remote government radar operator in the Canadian Arctic, the facility’s operator said Friday.
The attack took place Thursday at an outpost on Brevoort Island, in Canada’s northeastern Nunavut territory, said Nasittuq Corporation, the logistics company contracted to operate the object.
“The attack of two polar bears caused the loss of one of our precious employees,” the message reads. “Employees of Nasittuq went to the place of events, and one of the animals was put to sleep.”

In the far north of Canada, there are numerous Northern Warning System posts, including this one, that serve as a line of defense against aircraft incursions and cruise missile attacks. The radar covers an area of more than 5,000 km (3,100 mi) from Alaska to Labrador in eastern Canada.
It was previously reported that polar bears in Canada’s Western Hudson Bay on the southern edge of the Arctic continue to die in large numbers.
