At least 10 children died on Friday night in a fire in the children’s ward of a medical college in the Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is feared that the number of children killed may increase. Information from PTI.
Besides, 16 children were injured in this fire, and 37 children were rescued from the spot.
District Magistrate (DM) Avinash Kumar told reporters that the fire broke out at the Neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Maharani Laxmi Bai Medical College at around 10:45 pm yesterday. An electrical short circuit is initially thought to have caused the fire.
The chief medical superintendent, Sachin Mahar, said 54 children were hospitalized in the moments before the fire broke out. Due to the fire, many children were trapped. Firefighters helped rescue the trapped children. An attempt was made to extinguish the fire right away. But the fire spread quickly because of the excess oxygen in the room. Many children have been rescued. 10 children died. Injured children are being treated.
Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, has already made inquiries concerning the fire. He gave the concerned officials instructions to treat the injured children properly. Within 12 hours, the Deputy Inspector General of Police Range and the Divisional Commissioner of Jhansi have instructed that a report on the fire be submitted. On Twitter, he also posted his sincere condolences to the family who had lost a loved one.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences on social media platform X over the Jhansi Medical College in Uttar Pradesh fire accident and Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each of the children killed. And Rs 50000 will be given to those injured in the incident.
