DC plane crash: Kremlin mourns after Russian skaters confirmed dead

DC plane crash: The Kremlin expressed its condolences after an American Airlines plane carrying Russian and American former world figure skaters collided with a US Army helicopter in the capital, Washington, DC, on Wednesday (29 Jan). Newsweek reported.

Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, Dmitry Peskov, confirmed that Russian figure skaters Evgenia Shishkova, 52, and Vadim Naumov, 55, were among those on board the plane that crashed.

American PSA Airlines Flight 5342 was carrying 60 passengers and four crew members from Wichita, Kansas, to Reagan National Airport in Washington, D.C., when it collided with an Army medium utility Black Hawk helicopter on Wednesday (Jan 29).

According to Reuters, the military Black Hawk helicopter was carrying three US Army soldiers who were participating in a training exercise.

According to Peskov’s message at a press conference, he spoke of bad news from Washington. He expressed grief and condolences to the families and friends who lost their fellow citizens in the plane crash.

Peskov added that there are no plans for high-level contacts between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump regarding the plane crash.

The Russian Figure Skating Federation, Russian skaters, coaches, and experts are shocked and deeply saddened by the horrific accident in Washington, according to the Russian News Agency TASS.

According to NBC News, Doug Zeghibe, executive director of the Skating Club of Boston, said that 14 skaters are expected to die in the plane crash and that six people on the plane were affiliated with the Skating Club of Boston.

Trump’s statement on the plane crash

After the incident, President Donald Trump said in a statement that, “I have been fully informed of the horrific accident at Reagan National Airport. May God rest their souls. Thank you to the first responders for their incredible work. I am monitoring the situation, and I will provide more details as they arise.”

Trump told reporters at the White House that there were no survivors in the plane crash.

According to Newsweek, the Pentagon has opened an investigation into the accident, and the cause of the incident remains unclear.
