Trump warns BRICS

President Donald Trump threatened the BRICS group, warning against replacing the US dollar as their reserve currency, saying in a post on their social media platform Truth Social, “Go find another sucker.”

what reason

The continued use of the US dollar by BRICS countries plays an important role as the world’s reserve currency and is widely used for international trade, and if the group decides to move away from the dollar, it could damage the US’s financial dominance.

Trump’s “America First” approach to citizens on trade and foreign policy includes threatening tariffs on several countries, including Canada and Mexico, but also BRICS member China.

Trump warns BRICS: On Thursday (30 Jan), Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social that, “The idea that the BRICS countries are trying to move away from the dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER. We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile countries that they will neither create a new BRICS currency nor back any other currency to replace the mighty U.S. dollar, or they will face 100% tariffs and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. economy.”

Trump also added, “They can go find another sucker nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International trade, or anywhere else, and any country that tries should say hello to tariffs and goodbye to America!”

What is BRICS?

Russia, India, Brazil, and China formed the trade bloc called BRIC at the first summit in Russia in 2009, and the group adopted the name BRICS after South Africa joined a year later. There are currently ten countries in the bloc.

In 2023, members voted to greatly expand the BRICS group, and Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates accepted the invitation and joined in 2024, which saw the bloc effectively disrupt the global power of the dollar.

In August 2023, at the 15th BRICS Summit, Argentina received an invitation, but the country’s new government withdrew from the process after the victory of the libertarian candidate Javier Milei.

On January 7, 2025, Indonesia became the tenth full member of the BRICS bloc, bringing the country’s inclusion significantly into the bloc, and accounts for about 45 percent of the world’s population and 35 percent of global gross domestic product, as measured by purchasing power parity.

According to Newsweek, there has been talk of the BRICS bloc moving to a shared currency called the unit, which would be backed 40 percent by gold and 60 percent by BRICS members’ local currencies.
